When physical therapy treatments are performed in water, it is known as “aquatic therapy.”

Aquatic therapy is a great alternative to land-based therapy programs because it uses the natural buoyancy of water to unload any excess pressure placed on the joints. This in turn allows you to move more with less pain. Aquatic therapy also uses the resistance of water to help you gain strength and improve balance.

For some, participating in an aquatics program seems a little out of the ordinary so we’ve compiled a list of commonly asked questions we get from patients experiencing aquatics for the first time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to be able to swim?
– You do not. Your physical therapist will incorporate exercises strictly based on your comfort level in the water. Also, please note that aquatic exercise is most commonly performed in shallow to chest depth water.

What do I wear?
– Many patients wear a one piece bathing suit, but any clothing items that you don’t mind getting wet are acceptable. Some patients wear shorts/compression shorts and t-shirts as an alternative. Aquatic shoes are also preferred by some patients, but remember that shoes with laces are not allowed.

What do I bring?
– Bring your own towel and a dry pair of clothes to change into after your treatment. If you struggle getting dressed you may want to bring someone with you for assistance. Dressing rooms and locker rooms are on site. Also remember water for hydration.
