Vertigo and Dizziness
Pro-PT understands that dizziness and imbalance are common occurrences. We all know someone who suffers or who has suffered from dizziness or vertigo. You may not have to live with your symptoms or take medication for dizziness or vertigo the rest of your life! If your medical professional has not suggested physical therapy from a physical therapist with specialized training, like at Pro-PT, you may want to ask for a referral today.
It is estiamated that dizziness accounts for 5% of all primary care visits. “Dizziness” can mean many things to patients but generally if refers to a sense of disorientation without a false sense of motion. On the other hand, “vertigo” is a spinning sensation or false sense of motion in the absence of head movement. The two terms are often used interchangeably. “Dizziness” may also be used by patients to describe a feeling of being off-balance (disequilibrium), a feeling of losing consciousness (pre-syncope), or lightheadedness.
Treating Vestibular Issues to Resolve Symptoms
To treat dizziness, vertigo and imbalance, an individualized evaluation and treatment plan is required. Not all dizziness and vertigo can be treated the same way. Some vertigo, such as Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), can be treated within a few sessions with a specific maneuver to treat the condition. BPPV symptoms include short bouts of spinning that can occur when looking up, lying down, sitting up or rolling over in bed. There are several maneuvers and the correct maneuver needs to be performed for the specific type of BPPV. Other types of dizziness and vertigo may require a more extensive prescription of exercises that will be decided after your physical therapy evaluation is preformed.
The professionals at Pro-PT have extensive training and can help you alleviate many types of vertigo and dizziness, allowing you to return to full function. Don’t let dizziness and vertigo hold you back! Help is out there! If you experience dizziness, vertigo, lightheadedness or imbalance, let one of our therapists perform a comprehensive evaluation and create an individualized treatment plan to help you return to full function.

“I have been suffering from vertigo for over 15 years and have not received any relief from traditional treatments. Thanks to Jen at Pro-PT and her testing, she informed me that my vertigo was coming from my horizontal canals. This type of vertigo is treated totally different. After only three treatments, my vertigo is gone. I know it can flare-up again, but at the first symptom, I will be calling Jen at Pro-PT. If you have vertigo, I would highly recommend that you go see Jen at Pro-PT. She is my hero. Thanks Pro-PT!” — Sincerely, Annette McLeod
